Sustainable spotlight on Sunswap

Sunswap is on a mission to decarbonise the cold chain, utilising energy prediction technology, Adaptive Battery Capacity™ and solar power,  to replace diesel powered transport refrigeration with zero emission technology.

But what even is the cold chain?

The cold chain is an integral part of the food supply chain that we all rely on. From producer to consumer, the temperature of perishable products needs to be managed to maintain quality and safety. Transport refrigeration is used to keep goods chilled whilst on the move; and this is where Sunswap comes in.

Almost all of the world’s 5.6 million transport refrigeration units (TRUs) are diesel powered, which is having a detrimental effect on air quality and CO2 emissions. Sunswap’s battery and solar power technology provides a 100% reduction in air quality emissions and offers a 79-93% reduction in global warming related emissions.

Sunswap’s journey so far includes..

Joining our third Sustainable Accelerator programme, receiving support across design and marketing, grant applications, IP and digital product management strategy, board planning and fundraising. Since joining the Accelerator, Sunswap has secured £867k of funding, filed a patent and doubled the value of the company. Plus, they’ve just announced their first customer deployment!

Sunswap’s first customer deployment is with Northern Europe’s largest shipping and logistics company, DFDS. The arrangement will involve DFDS using Sunswap’s zero emission TRU on UK roads in February 2022, and following a successful trial they will confirm an agreed pre-order. Michael Lowe, CEO of Sunswap, commented on the partnership stating:

“It has been pleasing to see that businesses in the industry are increasingly cognisant of the need to switch to green transport refrigeration to support the drive to achieve net zero.”

This is a substantial milestone for Sunswap, and a huge step in the right direction for the cold chain industry in the fight against climate change. After the success of 2021, we can’t wait to see what’s in store for Sunswap in 2022!
