Spotlight on TripShift: Helping Businesses to Move Better

In 2022, the ISSB (International Sustainability Standards Board) voted to include Scope 3 emissions reporting in its new standard for corporate sustainability disclosure, bringing Scope 3 emissions in the limelight of reporting for businesses. Scope 3 includes emissions related to business travel, employee commuting and across a business’ supply chain - all of which are notoriously challenging to measure.

Enter TripShift

One of our longest standing community members, TripShift, is on a mission to enable businesses to measure and manage their Scope 3 emissions, making people and businesses move better. Through automated emissions measurement for employee commutes and business travel, TripShift collects data that is key for Scope 3 reporting as well as hitting ambitious net zero targets.

From Private Jets to Green Mobility

With a background in the private jet industry, TripShift founder Andrew isn’t a stranger to the challenges of the transport and mobility industry, which is one of the most carbon intensive in the world.

“I felt frustrated with the aviation industry’s failure to
effectively address carbon emissions”  he comments.

Determined to tell the mobility story in a fresh and compelling way, Andrew founded TripShift, demonstrating the power of carbon data and its power to inspire transformative change for businesses and individuals.

The TripShift App

Initially conceived as a consumer app in 2019, Andrew quickly recognised the growing demand for business-to-business (B2B) solutions, driven by changes to legislation around Scope 3 emissions. This led TripShift to pivot its focus towards corporate and business clients, helping them manage compliance whilst implementing effective net zero strategies that lead to actual reductions in emissions.

The TripShift platform consists of 2 key elements – a smartphone app and a corporate dashboard - that measure people’s business journeys and collect reliable transparent data which is shared with the employer.

Yet, as Andrew explained, the platform goes beyond data collection, focusing on empowering individuals and fostering behavioural change. With nudges and gamification elements integrated into their app, TripShift encourages healthy competition among teams within organisations. The creation of league tables enables different offices or departments to compare and celebrate their carbon savings, and loyalty points incentivise individuals by providing discounts on public transport, e-bikes, and other eco-friendly alternatives.

The app also ensures privacy for employees, who can set their own schedules and location privacy as well as distinguishing between personal and business travel.

What’s next for TripShift?

Five years on and TripShift’s clientbase includes large corporations such as Siemens and Enterprise that are striving to reach their net zero targets. This work is yielding exciting collaboration opportunities with organisations that provide Scope 1 & 2 data, meaning that together they can provide a full report across all a business’ emissions. As trials are successfully completed, TripShift is looking to expand beyond the UK, to Europe and globally.

Another of TripShift’s next focuses is on supply chains, exploring how their technology can help us to better understand emissions around delivery processes. The first step has been to reach out to fellow SV ecosystem members that are already working in this field such as Emsol and Sunswap. Whilst admitting that he originally joined SV ‘for a cheap desk’ (!) Andrew remarked that being part of a sustainable community is what has kept TripShift part of the workspace since joining in 2020.

“The opportunity to engage with other businesses who all
share the same sustainability objectives but with a variety
of backgrounds and experiences is really valuable.”

This expansion, measuring supply chain emissions, will be an exciting opportunity to expand TripShift’s offering to corporate clients and ultimately, enable businesses to measure and reduce emissions more accurately across all areas of their business.
